Hanbok Designer to Host Fashion Show on Dokdo

Lee Young-hee Lee Young-hee

Leading hanbok designer Lee Young-hee will host a fashion show on Dokdo around Aug. 9 to celebrate Liberation Day on Aug. 15.

Lee (75) told the Chosun Ilbo on Monday, "I thought I should do something to defend Dokdo when I heard that Japan is trying to teach students that the islets are Japanese territory" in recently approved middle-school textbooks there.

"I think we're being too complacent if we just think Dokdo is ours while Japan is devising ways to tell its young people that Dokdo is theirs," she said.

"Dokdo is Korean territory, and hanbok is the Korean costume," Lee said. "We're going to show our traditional costume to people around the world by hosting the show on our territory."

She said she is not worried about potential Japanese protests. "I have a lot of Japanese customers, to the point where Miyuki Hatoyama," the wife of former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, "made kimchi in a hanbok I made for her, and Tetsuko Kuroyanagi," a renowned actress, "once paid a call on the Japanese emperor in a hanbok I made. I believe they won't mind."
The show will feature about 30 hanboks including costumes for Chosun kings and queens, a traditional hanbok made from ramie, and the 2011 spring/summer Paris Haute Couture collection.

"Some people say the royal costumes are anachronistic," Lee said. "But I included them in the show to emphasize the dignity with which Korea has defended Dokdo for a long time."

About 40 models and other staff will take part, and the distinguished photographer Kim Joong-man will take photos of the entire show.

"We'll make the most of the terrain," she added. "We plan to present the show at the top of the islet as well as on the flatland near the jetty."

The Truth about Dokdo: An Interview with Prof. Yuji Hosaka (Podcast Pt. 1)

Prof. Hosaka holding one of many Japanese maps that show Dokdo as Korean territory.
“What do you think about Dokdo? Who does it belong to?” one Korean student asked Professor Yuji Hosaka during a Japanese Culture and Language course he was teaching in 1995. Little did he know that this one question would change the course of his life. How did he respond to the student’s question? “I couldn’t say because I didn’t know,” says Hosaka. Thus, what began as a simple bit of curiosity developed into a deep desire to objectively uncover the truth of whether Korea or Japan had the historical right to claim the 35 islets off the eastern coast of Korea. His fifteen years of research in Korea and Japan resulted in three books about the subject—“Dokdo, Our History,” “Dokdo of Korea” and “On Old Japanese Maps there is No Dokdo”—he attained the post of professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Graduate School of Policies Studies at Sejong University in Seoul and he is the head of the Dokdo Research Institute, also at Sejong.
Born in Japan in 1956, Hosaka graduated from the University of Tokyo and came to Korea in 1988 to attend Korea University where he earned an M.A. and Ph. D. in the Department of Political Science and International Relations. He became a naturalized South Korean in 2003 and solely resides in Korea now.
I met Prof. Hosaka in his cavernous office on the second floor of a large Hanok style building with sweeping eaves located on the northeast side of the Sejong campus. He had recently moved and it seemed in tune with his life given the many achievements and changes he’s seen. Hosaka is an avuncular man with the face of the boy in school who always won the science fair. He welcomed me amongst the hubbub that comes with a moving day; the fact that he’d made time on a Sunday when he was changing offices speaks volumes about his passion for and dedication to the Dokdo issue. Among the first things I noticed were maps, in their containers or along the walls, and during our interview more seemed to come out of the woodwork. Hosaka told me he’d been scouring maps for years since he began his research into the Dokdo issue and had seen thousands, locating and examining them in libraries throughout Japan and Korea. One of Hosaka’s greatest achievements, according to him, was the discovery that Japanese maps pre-1905 either didn’t even have Ulleungdo or Dokdo (nor any islands by a different name) or labeled the islets as Korean territory.
The following podcast is Part 1 in a two-part interview with Prof. Hosaka during which he explains how he began his research into Dokdo, why he became a Korean citizen, what he has uncovered and how the Korean government should proceed.

Dokdo is the world's geological heritage

As mentioned above,
Dokdo is a volcanic island that was formed during the Pliocene in the 3rd phase of the Cenozoic Era, between about 4.6 million to about 2.5 million years ago. Thus, Dokdo is much older than Ulleungdo Island (about 2.5 million-10,000 years ago) and Jejudo Island (about 1.2 million-10,000 years ago).

Considering its age, Dokdo is like a big brother to Ulleungdo and Jejudo.
If 'The waters of East Sea dry up and the soils of Mt. Baekdu blow away,' as the Korean Anthem sings, Dokdo would no longer be a small rock island, but the tip of a massive mountain that is about 2,000 in height.

Geologically, Dokdo is a volcanic island that is formed by lava from underwater volcanic eruptions of the East Sea. Originally, Dongdo and Seodo were not divided as they are today.

Dokdo, Korea's Beautiful Island

Dokdo is a small island located 87.4㎞ southeast of Ulleungdo Island. Located farthest from mainland Korea, Dokdo Island is in the eastern reaches of Korea’s territory. It is composed of two main islets, Dongdo (East Island) and Seodo (Western Island), and 30 surrounding rocky islets. Though small, Dokdo Island would be the most famous island in Korea. Long-standing disputes with Japan over the island have increased Koreans’ affection for the land to an ever higher level. Travel to this famous island, however, was not open to the public due to political and security reasons and for the preservation of nature. However, as travel has been allowed to ordinary citizens since March 24, 2005, a four-member team from KTO and VANK, a cyber agency for promoting Korea worldwide, seized the chance to visit the beautiful island. The team included Park Gi-tae, head of VANK, Jang Seong-il, director for international cooperation and English newspaper at VANK, Susan Crawford, advisor for the English website of KTO, and Do Hyeon-ji in charge of content management at KTO. Delighted by the news on the opening of the Dokdo tour to the public, the four people journeyed to the island at the end of April when spring was in full swing.

How to Get to the Island
The first thing you need to do to get to Dokdo Island is to book a ticket for Sambongho Ferry. The ferry operated by Dokdo Tour and Shipping Company is the only boat that will take you to the island. As there are many people wishing to visit the island, you may not be able to make a ferry reservation for the day you want to tour. Thus, it is advisable to reserve the ferry from Ullengdo Island to Dokdo Island first before booking a ferry to Ullengdo Island. Tourists must go through Ullengdo Island to get to Dokdo Island as there is no direct ferry. One more thing needed to set foot on the island is to send an application form to Ulleung-gun Administrative Office. This doesn’t mean that you have to visit the Administrative Office to submit the form. If you send the application form via fax to Dokdo Tour and Shipping Company, the exclusive ferry operator to Dokdo Island, the company will submit the form on your behalf.

Weather is an important factor in the trip. As both Ulleungdo and Dokdo Islands are located far from the mainland, even the slightest deterioration in weather can affect the ferries’ operation.

About Dokdo island

Dokdo ("독도" in Korean), also called the Dokdo island, is a group of islands in the East Sea. These islands are collectively called Dokdo. The name means a "rock island." Dokdo has been a Korean territory throughout all known history except during the Japanese occupation of Korea between 1905 and 1945.

Dokdo is also called Liancourt Rocks after the French whaling ship, Le Liancourt, which rediscovered Dokdo on January 27, 1849. The Japanese name for Dokdo used to be Matsushima (松島) until 1905, at which time it was renamed as Takeshima (竹島) along with a Japanese territorial claim.

Dokdo has been under the control of South Korean since August 15, 1948, on which the Korea-based U.S. XXIV Corps transferred Dokdo to the newly born Republic of Korea.
